The Hobbit: A Map of the Mountain

The First piece I am going to work on for this project is the scene where Gandalf lays out the map of the Lonely Mountain before Bilbo and the dwarves. This has always been one of my favorite scenes because every good adventure needs a planning stage where the team gathers conspiratorially around maps and charts and blueprints and hatches the plan.  And taking a mountain fortress full of gold from a fire-breathing dragon and hordes of wolf-riding goblins deserves of a bit of careful planning and thoughtful discussion.

"Where are you going?" said Thorin in a tone that semed to show that he guessed both halves of the hobbit's mind.
"How about a little light?" said Bilbo apologetically.
"We like the dark," said all the dwarves, " Dark for dark busines!"

  1. Hi Justin,

I finished reading The Hobbit for the first time about a week ago, and I loved it. Now I'm working my way through The Fellowship of the Ring. I'm glad you're illustrating the scenes you have in your mind before the movie; too bad you lost your first impressions from Lord of the Rings.
Two things: I'd love to see how you think Gollum should look, and I want to see some fire coming out of Gandalf's staff!!
Good stuff. Can't wait to see more.

    Peace, Will

  2. Justin that is so awesome! : )

I’m glad you are doing this! And I have a slight feeling I might honestly end up liking your pieces more than whatever weird Jackson and Dell Toro think up… haha

But I can relate to this. I’ve had to put all of my ideas of the Narnia books down on paper before the films have come out to, and might do this similar thing for the Hobbit as well.

But if you need any weaponry reference/inspiration for these future Hobbit pieces be sure to check out our swordsmithing site again!!... http://maddwarfworkshop.com/ hahaha ;)

Keep at the amazing work man!
