Thanks everyone for the great feedback. And if you haven't already, you should all check out Eric Orchard's piece for the Totoro project. (I'm jealous, I found out about the project after it was already finished.) He did a great piece for it that made it into the forthcoming Society of Illustrators annual. check it out at http://ericorchard.blogspot.com/2008/11/i-made-it-intothe-society-of.html
Have you thought about submitting some of these to the folks working on filming the hobbit? I remember looking through every Tolkien illustrator I could get a hold of while the movies were in the works. It was clear that Lee and Howe were the best, with Nasmith struggling behind, and a host of others off in the distance. Your vision can definitely hack it with those three - these really are THAT good.
Wow. This is so incredible! Thanks for sharing your art process. It's so inspiring to see it all come together.
ReplyDeleteGod damn, man. This turned out incredible! I'm looking forward to your riddles in the dark piece and your interpretation of Gollum.
ReplyDeleteYou do wonderful things with light, Justin. Kudos!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant.
ReplyDeleteThe lighting is so cool! Nice work on this piece.
ReplyDeleteAmazing work! Eric Braddock sent me over to see because we're all on a Tolkien kick right now. Really amazing work.

ReplyDeleteBy the way, I'm ordering your Beowulf book for my four-year-old son. I'm giddy thinking about reading it to him for the first time.
